Lush: The Women's Freedom of Expression
Classics
Hiruma Cyrus
When a group gets the classic status, it is commonly accepted that it is a name recognized by his fame and influence in the music. But the media makes immense lapses of memory and causes great injustice. Is the case of Lush.
The group was part of British musical movement called shoegazing , which emerged in the '90s. Several bands who believed that style cared more about playing and performing in concerts left in the background, hence the genus name of the sound, ie, shoe gaze - "look at the shoe" - down - mainly by the intensive use that were of guitar effects pedals.
However, Lush had an incendiary performance, especially with the charismatic singer and guitarist Miki Berenyi. Emma Anderson commanded the guitar and showed a notable presence on backing vocals. Her voice was melodic lines parallel, which complemented the music so personal, unique.
The original bassist Steve Rippon gave his place to Phil King. And drummer Chris Acland knew how to work the rhythmic variations, and is the musician who drove the dynamics of the compositions.
The sound of the group changed the course of his career. The first EPs, later collected on the CD Gala (1990) brought sounds ethereal, contemplative, other bands followed the same label, the independent 4AD, a quality reference at the time: Diff Juzz, This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins. In fact, Robin Guthrie, a member of that training, was the producer of several tracks of EPs.
In addition to this trend, a rhythmic vitality post-punk, hardcore and pop influences of the British 60 years completed the repertoire of Lush. It was an unusual and innovative fusion. At this early stage, the vocals worked as an additional tool, mingled with the other sounds of the band so that the letters were not always well understood.
The CD Spooky, 1992, was a source of controversy among fans, as Guthrie took over the production and full-time was responsible for the change in the sound, imparting a more pop direction and vocals in the foreground. However, the song "For Love" had a good impact on MTV (including Brazil) and was a decisive step towards the success of the group, which is no longer just a British phenomenon, and has received attention in several countries.

The content of the letters also underwent changes. Despite being a mixed group, two girls and two boys, we value freedom of expression for women. The idea of "a man's world false, rude and insensitive" is addressed directly. However, criticism has not focused only on men, but also on women who accepted or be deceived by false set of passions. As in "For Love":
And when it comes to himself, cries \ not look at the inside \ Just cover your eyes \ And though she feels her grief \ Pretend it was really love.
Or the irony of "Ladykillers," the typical cheap conqueror who cares solely for his narcissism:
Oh God, the guy has a huge ego \ He enjoys talking about himself day and night \ And he's seeing his reflection in a mirror of five feet, adoring yourself \ Seven years of bad luck.
The band also ventured complex issues such as child abuse in "Childcatcher". The proposal to write bold letters in an intelligent and irreverent was a milestone for the season, always with Berenyi and Anderson in creative control.
The album Split (1994) was not as successful as its predecessor, but showed a band in constant evolution. Lovelife (1996), in turn, had the highest rate of sales so far and a more direct and heavy musicianship.
Unfortunately the history of the band had a tragic end: drummer Chris Acland committed suicide (hanging) during an episode of depression, the home of his parents. Then Berenyi, extremely upset at the fact, declared the end of the group activities.
Even today, many bands that describe the universe of women cite the same dilemmas and issues that Lush described. The ideals remain the same and the legacy alive for new generations of musicians.
All the group's albums are out of print, except the collection Ciao! The Best of Lush, also released in Brazil. You can still find it in stores.
