Hiromi Uehara - Beyond Standard
From classic to innovative.

After all, who is Hiromi Uehara?
One of the biggest revelations of jazz today. He began to study piano scholar to six years. At 14 already had with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Graduated from the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. His first solo work, Another Mind, was launched in 2003 and since then his music has drawn the attention of the public and other musicians, including Chick Corea, with whom he has played. Beyond Standard is their fifth album and second with the presence of his remarkable band, the Sonicbloom: David Fiuczynski (guitar), Mitch Cohn (bass) and Dave DiCenso (drums). The name of the CD suggests that this is a collection of classics of music, which is true. But if the protagonist is Hiromi Uehara, you can be sure that the compositions were completely recreated, its style.
Three songs are classics of the American story. "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise" of 1927, is creating a myth called Oscar Hammerstein (partnership with Sigmund Romberg). Its introduction leads us to a vinyl disc of 78 rpm, with the right place and chiados where the piano for Hiromi desfila notes as if in a cabaret of the season. The following is pure technology and impromptu, almost a jam session.
Disclosure
From Hammerstein, in partnership with Richard Rodgers, we have "My Favorite Things", the film The Rebel novice, pretext for the brightness of the guitar from Fiuczynski, closely monitored by the suingue the bottom of Cohn. The climate makes it sound a tension in the air, completely different version of the film.
"I Got Rhythm" by George and Ira Gershwin, remains more faithful to the idea of legendary composers, although the pianist invest in velocíssimas sequences for a few segments, a show of technique.
In "Ue Wo Very áruk", better known as popular "Sukiyaki" is a battery that gives the tone, a softer moment, including the fluency of Hiromi's piano and subtle touches of guitar that complement the music.
"Led Boots" comes straight in the area of jazz rock. Composed by Max tecladista Midleton, opens the album Wired (1976), from Jeff Beck. It is the cue to enter the synthesizer in high doses and a guitar from David Fiuczynski more rockers, with more distortion.
And the tecladista feels comfortable in their own habitat, where growing your own music, "XYZ" from Another Mind. Changed the title to "XYG" because of the inclusion of Fiuczynski ( "G" for guitar), which was not present in the original version. Recalls part of the progressive rock band King Crimson, especially driven by the guitar and drums, which brings unusual notes, the style Adrian Belew.
Failed to mention only "Clair de Lune", the composer Debussy scholar. Indeed, the main melody serves as an excuse for radical changes full of improvising. This work represents the trend of the CD soundtrack: working with material that is part of history, great classics. It is a difficult task to get involved with this material anthology. Beyond Standard is capable of scaring the public and more traditional purists. In exchange, brings innovation, excellent musicians and update. Like it or not, is a strictly personal choice.
